Description

Arnhem was one of the first cities in the world where you can shop & live with Bitcoin. Arnhem Bitcoin City is among the world’s most Bitcoin-friendly cities. It is a city in the Netherlands with around 160,000 inhabitants.

Using bitcoin in Arnhem is basically shopping with the ability to pay with bitcoin in the many shops that participate. Also, restaurants participate so it’s possible to eat out and have your morning coffee solely by paying bitcoin. Some hotels are also on the list, as well as some service providers and a dentist. It’s easy to find the participating vendors via btcmap.org or via the map on their website.

Bitcoin city Arnhem started as early as in 2014, with 15 bars and restaurants. It gained relatively popularity in the first few years, but after 2019 you can see on their site that the number of bitcoin transactions was decreasing, obviously especially during the COVID-19 lockdown periods.

The network behind Arnhem Bitcoin City has regular meetups. They are also mostly bitcoin maximalists. In 2017, there were having difficulties in the bitcoin payment network with rising miner fees, which now have been resolved. One of the members explains:

“Back in 2017 when there was no lightning network and bitcoin fees were too high to be usable for grocery payments, we considered altcoins, but now lightning network is working great, and we have no interest in supporting altcoins.”

These days as a customer you don’t have to use your mobile phone and scan qr codes to make transactions. It is also possible to use the new bolt lightning cards that support NFC. As a payment provider, most participating vendors use Bitkassa which enables payments based on qr codes as well as nfc via their app.
