Description

Bitcoin Suriname, also known as Bitcoin Sranan, is an ambitious project aimed at transforming the financial landscape of Suriname through the adoption of Bitcoin and the Lightning Network.

Founded by Maya Parbhoe, the initiative draws inspiration from successful Bitcoin circular economies like Bitcoin Beach El Salvador, Bitcoin Jungle, Bitcoin Beach Brazil, and Bitcoin Ekasi.

The mission of Bitcoin Suriname is to promote Bitcoin adoption in Suriname. The core objectives are:

• Promote Bitcoin Adoption: Encourage the use of Bitcoin as a medium of exchange.
• Educate Communities: Provide comprehensive education on the benefits and uses of Bitcoin and the Lightning Network.
• Leverage Renewable Energy: Utilize renewable energy sources for Bitcoin mining, ensuring sustainability and economic growth.

Activities and Initiatives

The journey of Bitcoin Suriname began in 2021 when Maya Parbhoe visited El Salvador and witnessed the positive impact of Bitcoin adoption. Inspired by this experience, she assembled a team of like-minded individuals and launched the “Eenentwintig” podcast in 2022 to educate and inspire the Surinamese community about Bitcoin.

Key activities include the following:

• Regular Meetups: The inaugural meetup featured Paco de la India as a special guest. The event successfully introduced attendees to Bitcoin, demonstrated BitcoinizePOS, and facilitated Bitcoin transactions.
• Fruits for Sats Program: Inspired by Praia Bitcoin Brazil, this program at Kindertehuis Tamara orphanage in Paramaribo teaches children about Bitcoin through practical activities, such as using NFC cards to exchange fruits. The program also includes engaging activities like board games and mural painting.
• Community Building: Bitcoin Suriname has been active in organizing regular meetups and educating vendors on accepting Bitcoin, with a goal to create a thriving Bitcoin economy in Paramaribo and surrounding villages.

Bitcoin Suriname has achieved significant milestones and continues to engage in impactful activities to promote Bitcoin adoption. The project has successfully created a community on BTCMap.org and initiated the “Orange Pill” campaign, targeting 21 vendors in Paramaribo to accept Bitcoin. Additionally, they have delivered Bitcoinize PoS machines and NFC cards to various locations.

Regular weekly Bitcoin meetups and the Fruits for Sats program have been ongoing, providing continuous education and practical experience for the community. Schools have been equipped with Bitcoinize PoS machines, and the First Diploma Student Workbook has been translated and distributed to local schools, furthering the educational outreach.

Bitcoin Suriname’s team has also attended the Adopting Bitcoin conference in El Salvador, gaining valuable insights and connections.
